About Us

Pleasant River Wildlife Foundation was founded as a Maine-based land trust and 501(c)(3) charitable organization in 1998.  Our Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees and is staffed by an Executive Director.  We have adopted the Standards and Practices of the Land Trust Alliance as our guiding governance principles.

Our board and staff share a deep commitment to:

  • Protecting high value wildlife habitat in coastal Downeast Maine

  • Preserving traditional public access to all our properties

  • Working in close coordination with other partners to achieve significant conservation at a regional scale

In our first ten years PRWF has acquired seven properties in Addison’s Pleasant Bay and two properties in the adjacent Indian River estuary.  In all, PRWF Project Areas comprise:

  • More than 3½ miles of coastal frontage

  • Roughly 775 acres of forested land, freshwater wetlands, salt marsh and intertidal flats

We have three additional properties further east in Mason Bay under purchase option and scheduled for closing during 2009.  When completed these acquisitions will increase our total conservation holdings to:

  • More than 6½ miles of coastal frontage

  • Nearly 1,250 acres of high value upland and intertidal habitat
