Cooperative Efforts
Locally based land trusts like ours can be most effective when working towards a common regional vision in partnership with federal and state agencies and with large and small non-governmental organizations. By combining complementary skills and pooling resources, partnerships can:
- Complete multi-property and landscape scale projects that are beyond the capability of any partner acting alone
- Present a compelling case to funding agencies and donors
At Pleasant River Wildlife Foundation we expect to commit the majority of our efforts over the next few years to:
- Helping lead the Heads of the Estuaries Partnership in achieving its goal of protecting 7,500 acres of prime wildlife habitat and 25 miles of coastal frontage extending northeastward from the Schoodic peninsula to Machias Bay
- Actively supporting Maine Coast Heritage Trust and Downeast Coastal Conservancy in a similar regional effort extending along the coast northeastward from Machias Bay through the Bold Coast and Cobscook Bay
Several regional conservation partnerships now exist linking the inland forests and lakes, the historic Atlantic salmon rivers, and the coastline and offshore seabird islands of Washington County.
Pleasant River Wildlife Foundation also participates in two other key collaborative ventures:
- The Downeast Regional Strategic Conservation Planning Initiative brings together land trust partners, the Washington County Council of Government and the University of Maine at Machias to develop landscape scale strategies
- The Maine Wetlands Protection Coalition brings together federal, state and non-governmental conservation partners to coordinate and prioritize applications for federal and state grants to help protect high value wetland habitat statewide
