Habitat Protection

PRWF's approach to long term protection is based on fee acquisition of important properties supported by responsible long term stewardship.  A further layer of protection prohibiting development is afforded to many of our properties by conservation easements held by Maine Coast Heritage Trust or project management agreements with the State of Maine or the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

marshWe evaluate prospective acquisitions based on the following criteria:

  • Quality and rarity of habitat

  • Importance of the habitat for species that are particularly at risk

  • Value to the local community

  • Level of risk associated with leaving the property unprotected

  • Cost in relation to conservation values
  •

woodcockWe rely on advice from experienced wildlife biologists and community leaders to help identify properties that are most in need of protection.  Being locally based we are in an excellent position to assess the immediacy of development pressures and to negotiate favorable terms with sellers.

In late 2008 we undertook our first habitat management project, on Crowley Island, in cooperation with the Northern Forest Woodcock Initiative.  We expect to undertake additional projects to benefit woodcock, grouse, songbirds and other wildlife in the future.
